Dragon Talks May/June 2022
The month of May was devoted to delving into the disease called Lupus, in keeping with International Lupus Awareness Day, which was observed May 10. We were able to tap the expertise of two of our Dragon Talk members who experience this disease. Both Andrew Thirlwell and Rachel Lea shared their stories with us.
Andrew is a Dragon Claw Board member and a valued friend and supporter of Dragon Talks.
Rachel has published a book titled: LUPUS = Lift Up, Persevere, Use Strength: A Lupus Warrior’s story of hope, spirit, and fortitude.
Andrew and Rachel were open and engaging as each spoke personally about the onset, history, and outcomes of this autoimmune inflammatory disease. We are grateful for their honesty and for their ongoing contribution to our group.
Other meetings were equally interesting and informative.
Dr. Charmaine presented a very clear overview of the similarities and differences between Osteo- and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Charmaine is a wonderful teacher, and her talk gave rise to numerous questions and discussion. We are very grateful for the time and effort that Charmaine contributes to our Dragon Talks and to us as members.
Thank-you, Charmaine, for your generosity of spirit.
Dr. Sarah Edelman was with us for one meeting. She presented a very thorough and clear lecture on anxiety. Again, we were favoured with the expertise of one who deals with this issue in her clients, and again we learned much from her time with us. Dr. Edelman is a clinical psychologist, educator, and trainer. She has written two books, 'Change Your Thinking' and 'No Worries - a guide to managing anxiety and worry'' and co-authored a third, Good Thinking - A teenagers' guide for managing stress and emotions using CBT' (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).
June’s meetings included the first two talks by our own functional nutritionist, Charlotte Hill. Charlotte, along with Robin and Jill, over the next few months will be presenting a series of talks based on earlier talks they have given to Dragon Talk members. Charlotte will present five sessions on nutrition, Robin will give five sessions on stress management and the psychology of illness, and, in the new year, Jill will present five sessions on bone fitness, and movement.
Our own Susan Hughes led us in a very informative overview of the work of our Dragon Claw Charity in the production of a series of brief videos to encourage the Australian Indigenous people to avail themselves of the medical system and medicine available for those with AIID. This work has a wider scope in that it is the foundation of presentations to be made to pharmaceutical companies in Australia, breaking down barriers and finding ways to walk alongside Indigenous folk.
Our Dragon Talks in May and June also included coffee times, with one dedicated to welcoming newcomers, and hearing of their journeys with AIID. It was a great way to get to know each other.
Please consider joining us for any or all of our weekly Dragon Talk meetings.
